The UAE has formally committed Archer's Midnight eVTOL to a commercial launch pathway, a first for any national aviation authority

Archer Aviation's electric air taxi has been placed on a formal pathway toward commercial service in the UAE, the first time a national aviation authority has committed the aircraft to a revenue framework.
On May 7, the General Civil Aviation Authority said it was transitioning Archer's Midnight aircraft into a Restricted Type Certificate programme. This mechanism allows initial commercial operations under defined conditions before full type certification is granted.
More than a year of preparatory work preceded the decision. In July 2025, Midnight completed flight tests in Abu Dhabi's extreme heat and humidity, observed by senior GCAA officials. A separate deal with Jetex, the private aviation services group, secured terminal access across the UAE for future operations.
Both Abu Dhabi and Dubai have already designated air corridors and advanced construction of vertiports, the small-scale terminals needed for vertical take-off aircraft. Inter-emirate routes are expected to cut travel between the two cities to under 30 minutes. That infrastructure head start distinguishes the UAE from markets where ground facilities remain years away.
Archer's financial position has strengthened in parallel. Following a 2025 capital raise, the company holds roughly $2bn in liquidity. A White House executive order directing federal agencies to speed domestic eVTOL deployment has added political tailwind, and Archer is the designated air taxi provider for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. US certification by the Federal Aviation Administration continues through its fourth stage alongside the UAE process.
Manufacturing remains the more immediate constraint. Production at Archer's Georgia facility has progressed more slowly than originally planned.
Initial UAE routes will carry operational restrictions, a standard feature of the restricted certificate framework rather than a setback. By design, the programme permits limited commercial flying while regulators and operators accumulate real-world safety data.
Abu Dhabi's move places the UAE at the front of a global race to bring electric vertical flight into scheduled service. Whether that lead holds will depend less on regulatory ambition than on Archer's ability to deliver aircraft at scale.
